Unbundled services and limited retainers involve the lawyer assisting the client with specific aspects of their case only. Unbundled services are ideal for clients who seek the guidance and advice of lawyers at a reduced cost. In Vancouver, the BC Unbundling Roster is the main organization focused on offering unbundling family law legal services. I am a member of the BC Unbundling Roster which can be found here.
What are unbundles services?
- • Unbundled services involve the family lawyer assisting the client with limited aspects of their case while the client handles everything else. This may be suitable for people who cannot afford full legal representation or wish to save some money, but still want the guidance and support of a family law lawyer.
- • For example, a client may hire the lawyer to assist them with negotiating an agreement on spousal support, but will manage the settlement of parenting arrangements, child support, and property on their own. Another example is a client who hires a lawyer for the sole purpose of having the lawyer represent them at a mediation or court hearing.
- • Legal coaching is a type of unbundled legal service. It involves a lawyer-coach offering behind-the-scenes guidance on both the substantive and procedural aspects of family law to provide a self-represented litigant with the strategies and tools needed to navigate the law and legal system.
